About
the SFHEA
If
you are a lecturer employed in the further and higher education sectors
in Scotland - the SFHEA is the only independent union to protect your
interests.
The
SFEA, Scottish Further Education Association, was formed in 1966 to
provide an independent voice for further education. The union steadily
grew in size and influence and in 1983, with a significant proportion
of our membership engaged in higher education, the union changed its
designation to the Scottish Further and Higher Education Association.
The
SFHEA is the only independent trade union for lecturers in further
and higher education. We have members in 43 further education colleges
as well as in Bell College, Glasgow Caledonian University and Napier
University.
We
negotiate LOCALLY for members' salaries and conditions of service
in colleges.
We
represent members INDIVIDUALLY who are in dispute with their employer.
We
offer legal advice and representation on matters relating to employment;
superannuation advice on matters relating to the Scottish Teachers'
Superannuation Scheme; ancillary services; insurance cover for public
liability and personal possessions.
The
SFHEA - how it works
AT
THE WORKPLACE
Your
Branch Secretary is your initial point of contact with the union.
SFHEA members are unique in having DIRECT ACCESS to the full-time
officials.
YOUR BRANCH
Every
member of the SFHEA belongs to a branch.
Branches
provide a mechanism for members to meet and discuss issues of concern
and to participate in forming the policies of the union.
The
branch exists to:
*
Bring new members into membership
*
Give a voice to members to raise issues of concern
*
Send delegates and motions to the meetings of Council and the Annual
General
Meeting.
NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
The
National Executive Committee is made up of elected representatives
who are responsible for the governing of the union in between meetings
of Council.
COUNCIL
Council
is composed of the SFHEA Officers and elected branch representatives
and is the directing body of the SFHEA.
The
Council has two active sub-committees - Educational and Current Issues
Committee, Salaries and Conditions of Service Committee. The Council
also appoints a standing committee, the University and Central Institution
Section Management Committee.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The
Annual General Meeting is the supreme policy making body of the SFHEA
and is composed of elected lay member delegates.
